Proximity credentials offer an affordable yet robust solution for entry-level access control. The microchip embedded within a proximity card has only one function: to provide the prox card reader with the card’s identification number and/or site facility code number so it can be verified with a remote computer. Many access control systems only read the identification numbers and do not require the available memory that is present in a smart card. Prox cards are commonly used for door access to replace traditional locks and keys, with added security.

A smart card can provide identification, authentication, and store information on the card because of the microchip and memory which is embedded within the smart card. It is a physical card that has an embedded integrated chip that acts as a security token.  Smart cards are designed to be tamper-resistant and use encryption to provide protection for in-memory information.  The smart card technology is mainly used for authentication, storing personal information and storing values.
